Updated: Apr 6, 2022

I said it was coming, and now here it is. The official Upcycled Thread glossary. This is a list of all the definitions of topics that we've covered so far, and I'll update it with new definitions going forward.

Circular Fashion: Clothes, shoes or accessories that are designed, sourced, produced and provided with the intention to be used and circulate responsibly and effectively in society for as long as possible in their most valuable form, and hereafter return safely to the biosphere when no longer of human use. (Dr. Anna Brismar)

Fast Fashion: Business model employed by many fashion companies. To put it simply, clothing stores will create a line of inexpensive clothing to coincide with a trend or season, and then discard of any unsold product at the end of that trend/season.

Greenwashing: Disinformation disseminated by an organization so as to present an environmentally responsible image. (Google) In English, the act of marketing products as green or sustainable to draw in consumers, despite not partaking in any sustainable practices or eco-friendly initiative.

Plarn: "Plastic yarn": Type of string made by upcycling plastic bags. Cut the bag into loops, and then loop them together to create one long string. This string can then be rolled up into a ball and then used in sewing, knitting, crocheting, etc. applications.

Sustainability: Avoidance of the depletion of natural resources in order to maintain an ecological balance. (Google)

Upcycling: The act of reusing discarded objects or material to create something of higher quality or value than the original components. (Gosh darn alphabet putting the most important one at the bottom)

Zero-waste: A set of principles focused on waste prevention that encourages the redesign of resource life cycles so that all products are reused. (Google)
